7. Italy cycling trip 2018 – Dolomites - June 15th to 30th or July 1st

This is an open call for interest in the Italy 2018 cycling trip to the Dolomites during the second half of June that was presented at the club AGM in November. All important details have been set now. These plans were sent out a couple weeks ago to the alumni group of our previous trips to France, and so far there are only a few who’ve expressed serious interest, so there are spaces available.

June 15th to 30th or July 1st for anyone who wants to stay and extra day to visit Venice. There are flights back to Montreal on both those days.

KNBC members are planning a two-week self-guided but supported tour through the regions of Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tyrol and Veneto in Italy, concentrating on the Dolomites. The itinerary will be a counter-clockwise loop, starting and finishing in Venice. In total there will be 12 days on the bike plus one day off in the middle as we have traditionally done on our past trips to France.

There will be SUBSTANTIAL climbing and descending, and the mountain views will be spectacular, similar to our 2013 Route des Grandes Alpes trip. However, with two-night stays in three towns instead of the usual one (for the mid-trip off day) and some creative route choices (there are multiple routes prescribed for every day but one), it’s possible to bypass a considerable amount of difficult terrain and cut out a lot of distance, too, while still enjoying a mountain cycling vacation.

All the required hotel reservations for this trip have been made. There is space for 14 people, including the SAG driver, spread over two double rooms (for couples) and five twin rooms (for singles in shared accommodation). Although this puts a hard limit on the size of the group, we can report precise cost estimates for accommodations of about €650 to €685 per person. Quality/standards (3-star, mostly) and locations are similar what we normally enjoy for France. Also, all room reservations were made to allow for free cancellation up until the beginning of June so that if anyone signs up but then realizes a couple weeks before the start of the trip that they can’t come due to unforeseen circumstances, no one will be on the hook to pay late-cancellation fees, or for rooms that sit empty.

Including airfare, common expenses (van rental, printing of the map book and other material, and the SAG driver’s airfare) split among the riders, and reasonable additional food and drink expenses, the total cost per person of this trip is expected to be C$3000 to C$3500, which is in line with our recent trips to France. Note that this INCLUDES flying to Venice and back (direct and non-stop from Montreal, on AirTransat) and bike transport.

Please contact Don Gregoire at speedyjets12@outlook.com and Tom Seniuk at thomas.seniuk@sympatico.ca if you are seriously interested in coming on this trip. We will reply with a copy of the trip flyer and the route itinerary, and we’ll be happy to answer any questions.
